Coal miner stops dozer fire

Resources Safety and Health Queensland has recommended a series of safety checks, following a fire in a faulty component of a mine dozer.

After the dozer unexpectedly shut down, a coal mine worker opened the diesel particulate matter filter compartment and observed flames coming from the filters.

Smoke from the incident entered a nearby inbye panel, causing other miners in the panel to evacuate.

The mine worker who discovered the fire extinguished it shortly after, averting a potentially serious safety incident.

After an investigation, it was determined that the scrubber water isolation vale – that might have prevented the fire – was left in the off position after maintenance. Additionally, the safety circuit flow controller was nearly fully wound out.

It was also found that fault finding procedures before the dozer was started were either not followed or inadequate.

Queensland is set to become home to Australia’s newest coal mine. Last month, Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek said she plans to give the green light to the Isaac River coal mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, marking the first coal project approval under the Labor Government’s leadership.
